Greater Experience

31 August 2012

A Premier League mindset...

Prior to our opening game with Stoke City - matchday programme 'The Royal' ran an interesting feature on the Premier League experience hosted within Brian McDermott's squad. It's well worth a read!

When Steve Coppell’s runaway title-winners propelled this club into the top flight for the very first time in its long history in 2005/6, it truly was a step into the complete unknown. Glen Little’s four substitute appearances for Bolton only actually represented 29 minutes of football and at no stage during those late forays onto the field did the tricky winger experience victory. And fellow winger John Oster’s top flight experience with Everton and Sunderland was something of a distant memory for the midfielder by the time he got another crack at the big time in 2006. And that was it as far as the squad’s previous Premier League experience went.

This season, Brian McDermott’s men are much better prepared…

Besides that, Kaspars Gorkss earned promotion in 2010/11 and briefly tasted the top flight atmosphere at QPR without actually getting on the pitch last summer, Alex Pearce played against Spurs in an FA Cup clash in the middle of our second Premier League season but never made a league appearance, and skipper Jobi McAnuff has been a nearly man so often, coming agonisingly close to a Premier League run out with West Ham and Crystal Palace previously. In total, we have 796 Premier League appearances within our ranks, and 80 goals to boot!
