Pavel's Dream

17 August 2012

The Pog ready for a stern test

Reading’s star signing Pavel Pogrebyak is determined to have a long stay in the Barclays Premier League.

The Russian striker is delighted to be at Madejski Stadium and says he is fulfilling his dream by playing in what he believes to be the best league in the world.

Pavel has been successful in the top leagues in both Russia and Germany, and is optimistic for similar joy in the Premier League after showing promise on loan at Fulham last season.

“I am very happy that I am here and I hope we have a great season,” he said. “I always wanted to play in England and it was my dream to be a Premier League player.

“The Premier League cannot be compared to the Championship, or any other league, and I want to stay in it for as long as possible.”

Asked what motivated his decision to sign for Reading, Pavel answered with two specific people at the club – Brian McDermott and Anton Zingarevich.

“The manager and the owner are the main reasons I am here. It was helpful for me that Anton speaks Russian, but the fact that the manager wanted me here was really important. He knows exactly how we can play and what we can achieve.

“Anton came to me at the Euros and said he wanted me at Reading. I knew a lot about the club, its great players and that Brian was the best coach in the Championship.”

Pogrebnyak has the Potters fresh on his mind after playing and scoring against the Potters for Fulham last year, and knows exactly what challenges they pose.

He added, “I played against Stoke in my first game for Fulham. It was a difficult match and it will be difficult once again. They are very strong, physical team - and we all know about Peter Crouch and what he can do. Hopefully it’s a full stadium and we get three points.”
