RFC Women 5-1 Colchester Ladies
Reading FC Women kicked off their return to the Women’s Premier League Southern Division with a convincing win over Colchester United.
A hat-trick from Francesca Kirby added to strikes from Lois Roche and Alice Palmer to seal all three points for Kelly Chambers’ side.
The first half was an even affair, with both teams having chances in the early stages of the game.
The deadlock was eventually broken by a free kick from Kirby, which found its way into the top left hand corner. Reading started to settle down and keep possession, finding gaps in the Colchester defence, and it was good link up play from Becky Jane and Kirby to exploit this and create the second goal.
The Royals continued to dominate, and it was Stacie Donnelly who played a clever pass over the opposition backline to release Kirby – who calmly placed the ball into the bottom left hand corner to complete her hat trick.
The second half started with the U’s on top, creating chance after chance, and after a flailing Reading arm conceded a penalty – the visitors slotted home from the spot to give themselves just a sniff of a comeback.
However some swift counter attacking would put pay to those hopes, as firstly Lois Roche sent home a neat chip over the ‘keeper – before Emma Jones’ mazy run set up Palmer for the fifth and final goal of the day.
