Royals boss always on the lookout
Brian McDermott says that the Royals are constantly on the lookout for new talent, as the January transfer window approaches.
Reading’s boss is fully focussed on a clash with Sunderland on Tuesday night, but acknowledged that the club’s scouting system is always on high alert.
“We’re always looking for new players, that’s part of my job really as a manager,” he said in his post-match press conference on Saturday. “As a scouting system you’re always trying to find players but what we’re doing, is working with the players we’ve got. We don’t talk about players we haven’t got and we’ll see what happens come January. We have to have both eyes completely on the next game.”
Brian had also given an update to the media prior to our clash with Southampton this past weekend, telling his pre-Saints press conference: “We have a couple or three targets – and then it would depend on finances. We’re just trying to strengthen the squad.
“For me personally, I feel that we need players that have played at this level and know the league. If, at this stage, we can get one or two players like that that know the league off by heart, it’s a good thing because they could come into the squad and hit the ground running.
“If the budget’s there, the budget’s there. We’ll have to wait and I’ll have to let Nick, Anton and the board discuss and finalise that. I’m involved in that but it’ll always come down to finance.
“It could be (someone on loan) but I only like to sign players on loan that we might possibly buy. I don’t like to sign players on loan just for the sake of it.”
