Key players revealed

Awards for trio

After an important home win over West Ham, three key players were recognised for their contribution to an excellent team display.

Defender Chris Gunter was named the official Reading FC man of the match, helping the Royals to a second successive clean sheet.

There were a number of candidates - as proven by the fact that Alex Pearce, Adam Federici, Adrian Mariappa, Jem Karacan and Pavel Pogrebnyak were also chosen by the press as our best player on the day.

Pearce was selected in Garth Crooks' BBC team of the week. He said, "I've given Reading a fair bit of stick this season for failing to close out games from winning positions. They showed that with their recent last-minute defeat at Manchester City. I gave Alex Pearce a mention then for his battling qualities and sheer commitment. Once again, he put himself on the line for the cause against West Ham, only this time he and his team got their rewards. Reading need more of the same if they intend to remain among the big boys."

Pearce made 16 clearances on Saturday, only two players made more in the Premier League this weekend.

Last but not least, Jem Karacan covered the most ground for us on Saturday, clocking up 6.76 miles. Jobi McAnuff was next with 6.12, then Pogrebnyak with 6.01.

Karacan was also joint top of our average speed list, coming out at 4.65miles per hour when the ball was in play, same as Danny Guthrie. Noel Hunt was our quickest over a single run, clocking in 19.62miles per hour, followed by Jobi McAnuff at 18.7mph.
