Pavel pleasing

Pogrebnyak plays

Seeing Pavel Pogrebnyak in a Reading shirt was a very positive experience for any Royals at our friendly with Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday evening.

The Russian international came on at half time for a first appearance for the club following his summer move to Madejski Stadium, and looked right at home.

It goes without saying he has technical ability and physical presence, but it was also good to see the left-footer's passing and willingness to work for teammates. It was of course just a friendly, but pleasing nonetheless. Fresh from the Euros, his quality is of the top level and it was extra special to see that in a Reading shirt.

Manager Brian McDermott said, "It was great to see Pavel play, he did well, his first 45 minutes for Reading and you could see he's a quality player, we're looking forward to working with him."

First team coach Nigel Gibbs added, "We've seen in the training, he works so hard for the team, that's very important.

"He's a quality player and he's shown that in patches tonight. The service at times could have been better to him but for the team he was terrific.

"There were some good early signs, him and Alfie linked up well. Jobi had a good chance from it, so it was good to see him on the pitch."

Reflecting on the game itself - a 2-0 defeat for Royals - Nigel told Reading FC Player, " Overall it was a good workout, bits of the games we did really well and others we need to work on but that's pre-season.

"As we mentioned Pavel getting his first 45, Simon Church another 45 after not playing the first game, we played a very competitive side in Sheffield Wednesday who did very well on the night.

"We changed the shape to give everyone game time and have a look at it. We're pleased with how things have gone on the trip, obviously disappointed to lose the game, we could have done better on the goals but these things sharpen as you go along but we'll be better for Stoke."

A full post-match video with Nigel is on Player now, and look out for highlights and a special Pavel feature in the next couple of days.
