Boss after 1-1 draw
Royals boss Brian McDermott was happy with the hard work his team put in during their pre-season tour of Portugal, and equally relieved not to pick up any serious injuries in a temptestous final friendly.
We drew 1-1 with top flight team SC Olhanense, and Brian McDermott was very unhappy with the referee's control of the game. There were four bookings, and some roughhouse challenges to say the least.
Brian said after the game, "I am pleased we came out of tonight with no serious injuries. Some of the tackles were naughty, we didn't get any protection.
"In the first 60 minutes we were good, back to ourselves with a good shape to us. We went in 1-0 up which I thought was fair, then putting a new team out for 30 minutes is not easy, the referee has given them a penalty from somewhere when we could have had one ourselves just a moment before.
"But overall I'll say again I'm really pleased we've come through unscathed. The attitude of the players and the training has been first class. That will put us in good stead for the season.
"It's no laughing matter, some of it was outrageous. You could see the tackles coming a long way off. Whether it's a friendly, a league game or whatever, it's really important that players are protected, which didn't happen.
"But there were lots of positives. It was a good goal from Danny, I thought our shape was good and it's all about August 18th now. We are building up to our first game of the season.
"The players have had 60 minutes, Danny has had 90, some have had 30 and we'll reverse that against Bournemouth. Then we're closer to where we want to be, the first game against Stoke."
