Football world lauds classic match

Some say it was the best League Cup tie of all time, some are calling it one of the best matches ever to be seen in English football. Yes - we were on the wrong end of the 5-7 thriller, but the Royals undoubtedly played their part in a truly unforgettable game of football. Here's what people around the world had to say....

National Press

Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel
Amazing. Incredible. Breathtaking. After another weekend of controversy, football was finally the winner at the Madejski. Reading manager Brian McDermott might not see it that way after watching his side squander a four-goal lead. But even he will find it hard to deny his side were part of something very special.

The Daily Telegraph's Henry Winter
This was one of the epic cup ties, an emotion-shredder of a match that saw the Mad Stad live up to its nick-name as Arsenal amazingly recovered from 4-0 down to reach the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup. Extra-time, extraordinary tie.

Daily Mirror's Darren Lewis
What a match. What a scoreline. After all the bad blood, recrimination and allegations of racism hogging the headlines, along comes this corker to restore our faith in the game we love. This was epic and enthralling. A roller-coaster of extreme emotions for both sets of fans at the appropriately-named Mad Stad.

Daily Express' Simon Yeend
Some Arsenal fans left with their team 4-0 down wafter 37 minutes. They missed one of the most thrilling games of modern times as the Gunners staged a remarkable comeback.

Daily Star's Adrian Kajumba
The Royals' home lived up to its 'Mad Stad' nickname as the Gunners hit back after the break to make it 4-4 and force extra-time.

Classy. RT@ReadingFC: It hurts. But you also have to give huge credit to Arsenal for an incredible comeback. #readingfc

The team were heroes tonight, and got unlucky against a side who just happened to pull the finger out when it counted. We just witnessed an absolute cracker.

Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand

Seriously find a tv, make a tv, whatever you have to do get in front of this game. First half of extra time Reading 4- 4 arsenal

Royals supporter Simon Hogg
The team gave it's all against a good team and played out a classic game that will go down in history. Yes we lost, but we fought to the end and we should be incredibly proud of the team and the effort they put in.

Royals supporter Oscar Quentin Antao
Proud of the lads gave it everything. QPR now.

Those involved in the game

Arsene Wenger
I would like to give credit to Reading. I hope they will not suffer from dissolution – they have a lot of confidence to take out of this game, they were outstanding in the first 30, 35 minutes – and they’ve shown that they are a good team. They should take credit from that performance and not be too disappointed.

Noel Hunt
