U21 Royals hold Everton

19 November 2012

Cummins' side earn 0-0 draw at Goodison Park

The young Royals are now unbeaten in six after holding a strong Everton side to a goalless draw at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Everton's U21s fielded the likes of Darron Gibson and Sylvain Distin - both of whom have experience in Europe, but a Jon Henly inspired Reading XI kept the Toffees at bay.

The Royals made a reasonable start to the game, but failed to create any serious threat on goal and were relieved when Blues' midfielder Francisco Junior fired just over the bar.

Minutes later Henly came to Reading's rescue when he denied Apostolos Vellios, a second-half substitute at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday, when he was through on goal.

Chris Cummins' men came close to breaking the deadlock shortly before half time. Jordan Obita made a dazzling run down the left and set up Aaron Tshibola, who forced Polish goalkeeper Mateusz Taudul into a smart save.

After the break, the Toffees saw much of the ball but it was the Royals with the first decent chance - Dominic Samuel snuck into the box, but his strike failed to trouble the 'keeper.

Reading then began to dominate the match, and went close once again when Samuel had a long-range effort deflected over by the frame of Distin.

Vellios had the final chance of the match with a strike from the edge of the area, but Henly was equal to the strike as the Royals picked up a decent point at Goodison Park.

The U21s will take their unbeaten record of six matches into next Monday night, as the Royals travel to Blackburn Rovers next.

Royals: Henly, Arnold, Griffin, Tshibola, Gunnarsson, Ugwu, Samuel, Obita.

Subs: Losasso, Lincoln, Webb, McDonald, Edwards.
