McDermott calls for no blame, and no excuses
Brian McDermott has called for his Royals players to showcase their fighting spirit as they look for their first league win of the season this weekend.
“The mood in the camp is good and we're looking to Saturday,” said Brian.
"This is when you need spirit - people talk to me about spirit after winning 15 games out of 17 last season. But that's just momentum - obviously you need spirit to dig those results out but this is when we need it most. We need people coming together and a 'no blame' and 'no excuses' culture.
"We need our fans - we really do. Anything that's worth achieving is never easy. If anyone says to me that last season was easy then trust me, it wasn't. But we got here and we're going to relish this season. Everyone takes responsibility. If someone makes a mistake then someone else gets him out of trouble.”
Fulham are not an unfamiliar club to McDermott. He made three appearances on loan at Craven Cottage whilst on the books of Arsenal in 1983 – and still has plenty of respect for the West Londoners.
"I played there when Malcolm Macdonald was manager. I know the club fairly well; it's a real family club in a nice place by the river. Martin Jol's done a great job there and has signed some really good players. It's the return of Pavel's old club of course, and it'll be good to catch up with Steve Sidwell who was a fantastic player for Reading when he was here. He will get a great reception, I'm sure.
"We can't wait - it's been such a long time. We've had a couple of difficult away games and we should have won against Newcastle. If we can put on that kind of performance like we did against Newcastle then we'll do well.
"Our record at home is fantastic - it's never an easy place for anyone to come to - people know that. We win games here so we're looking forward to it."
