Ladies see off Millwall

8 October 2012

Reading FC Women 3 - 0 Millwall Lionesses

A ruthless performance from RFC’s Women saw off Millwall Lionesses to go top of the Southern Division table.

An Alice Palmer double and a free-kick from Lois Roche were enough to end Millwall’s run of five consecutive wins.

Frank Kirby had the first chance of the match after she weaved in and out of Millwall’s defence but her strike cannoned back off the inside of the post, before Stacie Donnelly and Beck Jane were denied.

The Lionesses saw plenty of the ball early on but were restricted to two long range efforts which failed to trouble Grace Moloney’s goal.

It was RFC’s Women who grabbed the first of the game five minutes before half time. Kirby skipped towards the goal line and delivered a low cross for Palmer – who had a simple finish at the far post.

The Royals dominated the second half, and nearly doubled their lead straight from the restart – but Kirby was inches wide of the goal.

Lionesses’ goalkeeper Frankie Gibbs once again prevented Kirby from scoring, before Rosanna Lane headed wide.
But the pressure from RFC’s Women was soon reward when, on the hour mark, Roche superbly curled a 30-yard free kick into the top right corner of the goal to make it 2-0.

Millwall were looking vulnerable, and Kirby rattled the post for a second time in the game after an impressive solo run deserved a goal.

Reading’s attackers continued to link up well and soon netted an excellent third. Kirby received the ball from Roche, and went past a defender before setting up Palmer – who tucked away an angled shot for the third.

To their credit, Millwall fought to the end and forced a terrific save from Moloney to deny a goal-bound effort.

The fine whistle soon blew, and it was a deserved win for Royals who climbed to the top of the Southern Division table.

Reading’s Ladies will travel to Yeovil for a League Cup group stage game on Sunday.
