"We need to do ourselves justice"
Brian McDermott is determined that his side show the Premier League what they are about this weekend, as they travel to take on West Bromwich Albion.
The Royals boss readily admitted that his charges were not at their best in the first half against Tottenham Hotspur, but buoyed by a better second half display – has vowed to bounce back.
“We need to do ourselves justice and do the fans justice,” he told Reading FC Player.
“We need the fans to stay with us and I’m sure they will do. We’ve looked at the fact that we didn’t play a game for over three weeks before Tottenham. It’s a reason rather than an excuse – that’s a very long time. We’ve got that game under our belts now so we’ll be ready.”
The Hawthorns is a ground that will host good memories for McDermott – and he reminisced with our online TV station about a famous 3-2 FA Cup victory in 2010 (whch you can watch here
More fond recollections will come in the form of a certain Shane Long, who could well line up against his former club for the first time this weekend.
“I remember that game. We were 2-1 down and then Brian Howard scored a terrific late goal before Gylfi scored the winner with a fantastic curling shot into the top corner. It was a great night. I saw Shane last week at the Irish game so it’ll be great to see him again.
Finally, there was more praise for Jem Karacan after an important week for the Turkish midfielder, who penned a new long term deal with the club.
“I’m really pleased that he signed a contract. We would never want to leave us because he’s a Reading boy through and through. The last three years he’s played the majority of games under me as manager.
“He’s done great for us and he’s still young so he’ll only get better. He had that injury which he came back really quickly from. We all know what he is and what he thinks of the club.
“What Eamonn does at the club and the players we produce is second to none. We have a great track record and hopefully we can keep that going.”
