Midfielder welcomes his former club
Danny Guthrie spoke to the press ahead of a clash with his old club this weekend.
I guess you’d love to be involved on Saturday?
Yes, I’d love to play. Everyone wants to play against their old club and it will be a nice day I think. I’ve got a lot of fond memories there, some good friends – and I’d love to be involved.
Have you got anything to prove to Newcastle?
Not really, I don’t see it as that – I had some great times there and the chance came to move on. I didn’t sign a contract there, but there wasn’t any hard feelings there from the manager or anyone. When I played, I played well and I had a good relationship with everyone there. That said, it’d be lovely to win.
Brian McDermott has indicated that the squad perhaps showed a bit too much respect to opponents in the last couple of league games, has the team snapped out of that after the QPR win?
I hope so. The first two games we did really well, but I just feel the last couple of Premier League matches we’ve stepped off a little bit and not made it as difficult for teams to play against us, but hopefully yesterday was the starting point.
It’s always important to get a win, no matter what competition it’s in – we need to look at what went right last night and try to take it into our league form. We need to start putting clean sheets together.
Can Reading establish themselves after promotion In the same way that Newcastle did?
I suppose we can look at Newcastle and see what they did, finishing mid-table in the first season back and then having a great season last year. But, we have our own identity – and I think it’s important that we start to put our maker down – the way we want to play.
