McCarthy on his top flight debut
Alex McCarthy was delighted to get his first Premier League appearance under his belt – and wants to kick on from here.
The 22-year-old couldn’t do much about the Royals’ first home defeat in eleven, but took positives from the match individually and collectively.
“I’m over the moon to get my Premier League debut and hopefully I can build on it from here,” he said.
“After playing in the Championship, I’ve always wanted to make the step up to the Premier League. The games in this league are a lot more quicker paced, with better quality players.
“I was happy to make a few saves at the start of the game to get me into it. I wanted to get an early touch to get into the game so it was nice to make a double-save!
“We all needed a game this week and we’ve got our game under our belts so hopefully we can build on it.
“I have long-term hopes of playing for England one day, so hopefully this is my chance to kick on.”
McCarthy will be hoping to keep his place between the sticks for the Royals’ trip to West Brom on Saturday – where he will be reunited with fellow Academy graduate Shane Long.
“Longy’s a great striker - really powerful. It will be great to see him again but we will have to put friendships aside for 90 minutes.
“West Brom are a good team so it will be a tough for us on Saturday. But we’re all looking forward to it and hopefully we can get the right result.”
