A message to the fans

Adkins addresses Royals supporters

Speaking to the press, Royals boss Nigel Adkins gave a message to the supporters as he prepares for his first home game this coming Saturday. Nigel has enjoyed great relations with supporters wherever he has been in charge, and is looking forward to the same again at Madejski Stadium.

"We are Reading Football Club, the football club is about the supporters. We all share that same common goal. We want to win games before the end of the season, we want to be in the Barclays Premier League and we want to be excited about coming to the Madejski Stadium and travelling away. It’s hard earned cash people have to go and fork out to see their team. They want to see a team that’s committed, they want to see a team that ideally plays attacking football to score goals. This League is the highest pinnacle of English football. It’s exciting for the supporters, they know they’ve got a massive role to play.

I noticed in the canteen at Hogwood there’s a lot of history and quotes around the room, which is great. On one of the posters, they show that the Reading supporters were the first supporters to get the number 13 shirt - and officially be named the 13th man. That’s how much of a role they’ve got to play, it’s a massive role. We’ve all got to be together, they’ve got to drive the players on.

I want the players to pass the ball and to do that there needs to be no reprisals if they give the ball away, because it is a decision making process to pass it and sometimes the ball will go astray. But I want them to pass the football so they’ve got to know they can do that with the supporters being appreciative of the way they want to go and play and being supportive of them.

I know we’ll get that because everyone – if you’re a Reading supporter, you just want Reading Football club to do well."
