Alex in the spotlight

15 April 2013

Praise all round for Royals stopper

Royals goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has been inundated with praise following his man of the match display against Liverpool this past weekend...

What the managers said...

Nigel Adkins: "Some of the saves were world class and he's worked really hard to make sure we get at least a point. He's a young man, he's been out for a while and has got a bright future."

Brendan Rodgers:"I know young Alex very well - he's genuinely going to be a top, top 'keeper. To perform like that having been out for so long - it was an absolutely staggering performance. I can see him playing for England, there's no question about that."

What the players said...

Pepe Reina: "Credit to their goalkeeper McCarthy who was absolutely extraordinary. It happens in football sometimes when the opposition goalkeeper can have a day like that but we are frustrated not to have got the three points."

Noel Hunt: "He was superb, he pulled off five or six saves and the boys in front pulled off some great blocks."

Stephen Kelly: "Alex was fantastic today. The save from Steven Gerrard, I don't even know how he's seen it! Amazing strong hands. We've got three goalkeepers that the manager can rely on, it's a headache!"

Garath McCleary: "It was a fantastic performance from Alex McCarthy and a great team performance. I've said to Alex it was the best goalkeeping performance I've ever seen."

What the media said...

Unsurprisingly Alex was named in numerous 'teams of the week' across various media outlets - with the BBC, ESPN, The Sun and The Mirror amongst those including the Academy product in their top XIs.

The Independant gave the Royals stopper a '10/10' rating in their match round up, whilst former England international Garth Crooks singled him out for praise in his weekly BBC Column.

Alyson Rudd (The Times): "All kinds of narratives were expected at Madejski Stadium. That Luis Suarez might tear into a forlorn Reading or perhaps Adam Le Fondre would reprise his role as a super sub. What few expected was that a new Premier League hero would be born."

Dan King (The Sun): "Golf fan Alex McCarthy was right back in the swing with a sensational performance on his return to the Reading goal."

Rachel Griffiths (Sky Sports):
"As far as selecting a man of the match goes, it did not come much easier than picking Reading's goalkeeper Alex McCarthy following his heroics in the goalless draw with Liverpool."
