Boss on 'world-class' Alex

13 April 2013

Adkins lauds McCarthy heroics

When he walked into his post-match TV interviews after our 0-0 draw with Liverpool, boss Nigel Adkins said with a smile 'these questions could be short - Alex McCarthy great game!'

To be fair, the manager is always keen to talk about the group rather than an individual, but after a display like McCarthy's, it was impossible not to be taken aback.

By the time McCarthy pulled off a late save from Luis Suarez in which he clung onto the ball despite it going like a rocket, the whole stadium was almost laughing at how ridiculously good his display was.

And there is no better example of the respect he gained when Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard went straight over to the 23-year-old at full time to congratulate him. And all this on his first game since November!

Adkins said, "Wow, it was a fantastic goalkeeping performance wasn't it. Some of the saves were world class and he's worked really hard to make sure we get at least a point.

"He's a young man, he's been out for a while and has got a bright future.

"We've got some great goalkeepers here, Adam Federici and Stuart Taylor, plus Mikkel Andersen, and they work under a great goalkeeping coach. We want competition, that is important."
