Late show stuns Hammers

4 April 2013

West Ham United 1 – 2 Reading FC Women

Late goals from Becky Jane and Cheryl Wiliams completed a dramatic turnaround as the RFC Women beat West Ham 2-1 to turn up the heat on league leaders Millwall.

The Royals were slow coming out of the blocks but did have an early chance - Becky Jame shot just wide after some excellent build up play. It was the visitors that created most of the pressure, and Reading were thankful for the offside flag as the Hammers striker broke through on several occasions.

However, one chance lead to the striker being one on one with Royals goalkeeper Grace Moloney - who managed to get a slight touch on the ball but could only see the strikers well placed strike go into the bottom corner. West Ham continued the pressure and went in search of a second goal before half time, but the Royals defence stood firm.

The second half began and a much improved Reading side came out. The Royals got themselves in some great positions to pull level with the hosts, but failed to convert. Stacie Donnelly, and Alice Palmer and Jane all stuck over the bar, while the Hammers 'keeper was also called upon a number of times.

It wasn't until the 80th minute that Reading hauled themselves back into the game. Jane got on the end of a Williams pass and smashed the ball home to equalise.

Moments after scoring, the Royals were on the back foot and had to rely on Moloney to make a crucial save to deny the Hammers from immediately retaking the lead.

And with just five minutes to go, the turnaround was complete. Williams turned from provider to goalscorer as she picked up the ball from the wing, raced towards goal and saw her strike take a huge deflection off West Ham's full back and fly into the net.

Reading held firm in the dying minutes to secure all three points and move to within four points behind league leaders Millwall with two games in hand, ahead of this weekend's home clash with Yeovil Town.
