Adkins on McCarthy, full backs and GoodwinClick here to read Nigel Adkins' pre-match thoughts ahead of the trip to Norwich.
Royals gaffer Nigel Adkins was asked about a number of matters in his press conference on Thursday afternoon - and here's a round-up of what he said on three key topics....watch his entire press conference on Reading FC Player.
On Alex McCarthy and England....
I was at the goalkeeping conference at the weekend, at St George’s Park, and Jack Butland spoke. He’s got an England call up and he played for Birmingham in the Championship. So answering your question, it’s a case that’s proved it is possible. The important thing is for Alex and for all goalkeepers is that they want to be playing football. From Alex’s point of view, he’s been out for four or five months with a shoulder injury, he’s come back ever so well from that. That was his first start at the weekend had a really good game and he needs to start building on that.
Likewise you talk about where people are going in the summer, we’ve got good goalkeepers at Reading Football Club and Alex is one of them. And he wants to play regular football. That’s important.
I’ve been pleased with the three weeks I’ve been here, the goalkeeper coach we’ve got here - Sal Bibbo - is very, very good. And from that point of view the goalkeepers work really hard here. We’ve got a good experienced goalkeeper in Stuart Taylor here as well, he’s been round the block and his experience has been very good since I’ve come in. Adam Federici played in the first game, unfortunately he’s got his ankle injury.
On full backs....
He (Stephen Kelly) is a full back. Full backs can play full back. I’ve done it many, many times - I’ve played a right footed full back in a left back position, and if you notice as well as lot of teams now play opposite wingers on opposite sides, so they’re always driving in. So sometimes it’s good to actually play a right footed full back in a left back position, so when the winger comes in on his left foot you’re actually going to tackle him with your proper foot, instead of tackling with your wrong foot. Many full backs have an issue with that. So I don’t think there’s a problem.
On Craig Goodwin....
Because he can’t play in the under 21 game on Monday, we’ve managed to extend his trial period for another week so we can fit in a game. We’re going to have a game he can play in against QPR on the 30th. I think he’s done really well in the couple of weeks that I’ve seen him, it’s important that we give him an opportunity in the game. Football now is glowing global, the world has become a smaller place in respects of travel, scouts and players are coming from all around the world. Craig was set up before I’ve came in, that’s fair to say. But he’s come in and done very well on the training ground. We have to give him every opportunity to play a game.
