A clearly emotional Noel Hunt has vowed that the Royals squad will need no motivation when it comes to finishing their Barclays Premier League season with their heads held high.

Speaking shortly after the club’s relegation was confirmed following a goalless draw with Queens Park Rangers, the Irishman backed a ‘devastated’ dressing room to bounce back.

“Looking around the dressing room the boys were devastated. We knew we needed to win and we just couldn’t get over the line,” he said.

“Now we play for pride. You put on that shirt that’s got that Reading FC crest on it and you’d be embarrassed not to give anything but 100%. It’s a tough one today, but we’ve got three games left and we need to make sure we do ourselves justices and make the fans proud.”

Noel, who arrived at Madejski Stadium in July 2008, has backed Nigel Adkins to help steer Reading back to the top flight.

“This is a great club, a fantastically run club and if you look at what we’ve been doing for the last two or three weeks under the new regime it’s been a lot better. We’ve gone down today, but things are looking up for the club and the way it’s been structured. This is a great dressing room to be in.”
