Under-21s in narrow defeat

22 April 2013

Bolton edge Royals at Madejski Stadium

Reading’s under 21s suffered defeat in their final League game of the season, going down 2-1 to Bolton at Madejski Stadium.

In front of first team boss Nigel Adkins, young striker Dominic Samuel scored a good goal and although we pushed for an equaliser the visitors stood firm.

We remain top of our under 21s group with 12 games played, but Newcastle are only one point behind us with two games in hand.

Reading had good possession in the game but the visitors scored two nice goals – the first a fantastic strike by Adam Blakeman from more than 25 yards. Coming a minute before half time, it was a cruel blow, especially on goalkeeper Jonathan Henly who had performed very well.

And Tom Youngs scored from the corner of the box just after the interval to give our young side a mountain to climb.

We got a foothold in the game when Samuel showed a nice touch and finish to shoot home left-footed, and even though Wanderers sub James Kelly was sent off in injury time for a strong challenge, we could not find an equaliser we so craved.

Midfielders Aaron Tshibola and Jordan Obita were prominent in the second half as we pushed for a leveller but to no avail.

Reading (4-2-3-1): Henly; Cummings, Arnold (Keown 49), Partridge, Sweeney; Taylor (c), Tshibola; Ugwu, Obita, Samuel; Church

Subs: Lincoln, Webb, Cooper, Edwards
