Royals U18s 3-1 Bolton Wanderers U18s
The Royals Academy opened their season with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers on Saturday morning.
It was a great game of football at Hogwood Park, though after a bright start the home side fell behind as Rob Dickie attempted to hack a ball clear from his own six yard box – only for it to deflect back off a fortunate Wanderers forward and past a helpless Lewis Ward.
The home side, however, responded brilliantly – as De’Jaune Taylor-Crossdale scampered down the left hand side before finishing excellently past Trotters stopper Harry Campbell.
Reading had the bit between their teeth, as Tariqe-Fosu was denied with a smart save – before Liam Kelly gave his side a lead in fantastic fashion.
Fosu won a free-kick 25-yards from goal, captain Aaron Kuhl rolled it back – and the diminutive midfielder flicked the ball up into the air before sending a sensational volley home.
The visitors then had a goal ruled out for offside, before the Royals extended their lead through Conor Shaughnessy.
The Irish midfielder, who signed a professional deal at Madejski Stadium this summer, finished well after more good work on the wing by the lively Tariqe Fosu.
Fosu and Jack Stacey both had efforts saved after the break as the Academy attempted to seal three points, though they had to survive a scare as Wanderers won a penalty midway through the second period – only to see it smash back off the crossbar.
3-1 it finished – and it would seem Reading under 18s are picking up where they left off from their wonderful 2012/13 campaign.
