Akpala update

24 August 2013

Joseph trains with Royals

Striker Joseph Akpala has spent this week training with the Royals and is now flying back to Germany; the Royals will continue to monitor his situation ahead of this summer's transfer deadline on Monday 2nd September.

Joseph is a Nigerian international who plays for Werder Bremen, having previously plied his trade in Belgium with Charleroi and Club Brugge.

Manager Nigel Adkins said, "We've had an opportunity to take a good look at him this week, he's an international football player who’s played in the Bundesliga.

"He's got a scoring pedigree in Belgium before that, it hasn't worked out as well as it could have in Germany at this moment in time, and like I say he's a player we've had an opportunity to take a look at."

Asked about the current strength of his squad, Adkins said, "You look at the squad of players that we've got and every week so far there's been a question to me about 'he's not even on the bench' or 'he's only on the bench' – it highlights that we have got a strong squad of players for this level.

"But I want to keep pushing the boundaries – I want to get this football club back into the Premier League and that is the goal that we all share. We've also got to make sure there's a pathway for the youngsters to come through and play.

"For this window, if it would be good if we can we bring a couple more in, but likewise when it shuts we have loans available. There will be players in the Premier League not in the 25-man squad, so he can’t play for them – there are loads of deals always to be speculated about.

"I also want to make sure we stay in the race at the top of the division for when the next window comes around."
