"The lads were terrific"

Samuel and D'Ath on under-21s win

Royals youngsters Dom Samuel and Lawson D'Ath were delighted after they helped the under-21s to a fantastic 4-2 victory over Newcastle in their first Barclays Under 21s Premier League fixture of the season.

The duo each bagged a goal in the second half to add to Gozie Ugwu's excellent brace, and both of them were thrilled after the final whistle.

"The lads were terrific and we moved the ball really well," said Dom. "It’s always nice to win the first game of the season and it was good to get another goal – you can’t rest on your laurels.

“It’s a competitive league this year with great teams – but we’ve got that first win so hopefully we can get a winning streak."

D'Ath added, "In the first half we were decent, but a bit costly at the back. In the second half we came out and proved a point. We kept a clean sheet in that half and got the goals we needed to win the game.

“I was pleased to score and I thought because I made it 3-2, I had to pull it out the bag with the celebration!

“It’s more competitive for the under-21s for the season, and that’s how football is. You’re competing for your place in the side and also for the team in the league, which is the way it should be.”

“And I think that’s the best I’ve ever seen Goz play. He was unbelievable, unstoppable, he moved the ball well, held it up well and took his goals well. He had a great game."

Samuel echoed Lawson's words about Ugwu, who was top class at Madejski Stadium.

“He (Gozie) was different class. He must have had his magic boots on, he was top class and definitely man of the match.”

We'll have these interviews, including an exclusive chat with Gozie Ugwu, on Reading FC Player and Youtube soon.
