The Possession Game

16 August 2013

Preparing for a fascinating encounter

Nigel Adkins believes possession could be the key ahead of Saturday’s clash with Gianfranco Zola’s Watford.

With both sides showing early intent to play attacking football in the Sky Bet Championship, the manager is predicting a great spectacle at Madejski Stadium.

“Believe you me, it's going to be a cracking game. Fair play to Watford, I've seen them live and having watched them last season I can tell you they are a very exciting team to watch,” said Adkins.

“The way they play football is possession based. We’ve got to be mindful of that, if we give the ball away cheaply they’ve got a great counter attacking threat and two they’re all very comfortable on the football. It could be a possession based game. We're very much looking forward to it. I believe there's going to be over 20,000 people at Madejski Stadium, we can look forward to a great atmosphere.”

The manager also spoke glowingly of our under 21s' 4-2 victory over Newcastle United on Monday evening, and reiterated his determination to continue to give youth a chance at the club.

"As I’ve highlighted before, the teams that are successful in this division normally utilise between 28 and 32 players to deal with the rigors of the Championship season. We want to have a pathway for our youngsters to come through, they need to see there’s an opportunity, and what we’ve got to make sure is there is an opportunity for them. If the right time comes and we can put them in, we put them in. They resoundingly beat Newcastle United - and here the 21s and 18s train with the first team, there are not isolated groups, everyone is working together to develop football players and ultimately get them into the first team."
