Ugwu: What we can do

14 August 2013

Young striker on exceptional display

Under 21s match winner Gozie Ugwu put in a wonderful performance against Newcastle United earlier this week, but is still setting his standards high.

The young forward bagged a brace and an assist in our 4-2 win over the Toon at Madejski Stadium, but told Reading FC Player that he wanted more!

“I should have got a hat-trick to be fair,” the 20-year-old told our online TV station.

“But it was a really good performance and we’re happy with it. I should have got the third but Lawson tucked it away thankfully. It was a great team performance and it just shows what we can do. We always looked like we were going to win when we came out in the second half, and it was a good result.”

The striker’s performance has caused a stir amongst Royals fans, with two fantastic strikes almost capped by a wonderful piece of ingenuity in the second half that came inches away from a quite unbelievable strike. You can watch it all in our YouTube video below.

“I just thought I’d go out there at go at it straight away. With the first goal I was lucky with a little ricochet and then it opened up for me and I thought ‘why not’ – I just went for it and it bent in. For the second goal I knew the defender was coming across so I knew exactly what I was going to do. Luckily enough it came off for me. We’re relishing the chance to play these big clubs – we think we’re good enough so we can’t wait to show what we can do.”
