Academy cruise through

13 December 2013

Leeds U18s 1-3 Reading U182

Leeds 1 (Stokes 32)

3-1 it finished - and Reading now face a home tie with either Bristol Rovers or Crewe in Round Four.

Kelly made it three by capitalising on some uncertainty from the Leeds backline, and the Royals never looked likely to relinquish their lead - as Cardwell fired wide, before Fosu also missed out on a brace as his long ranger pummelled the crossbar.

The technically gifted midfielder hurled a huge, Rory Delap-esque throw into the centre of the box which the home side couldn't deal with, allowing Fosu top bundle home.

Leeds did come out of the blocks quickly after the interval, but found themselves behind again, as Reading's latest Icelander Fridjonsson unleashed his secret weapon!

United grabbed an equaliser as the impressive Eoghan Stokes drove to the edge of the box before sending an unstoppable daisy cutter past Lewis Ward.

Harry Cardwell gave the Academy the lead after 16 minutes, finishing coolly after a well worked team move involving Sammi Fridjonsson and Liam Kelly.

The Royals cruised through to the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup with a resounding 3-1 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road.
Leeds United: Atkinson, Coyle, Coker, Bennett, Tiesse, Purver, Roper, Phillips (C), Denton, Cook, Stokes.
Subs. Dixon, Mulhern, Booker, Mbanje, Lyman

Reading: Ward; Watson, McLennan, Dickie, Hyam; Kuhl (C), Fridjonsson; Stacey, Kelly (Shaughnessy 83), Fosu; Cardwell
Subs not used: Husin, Taylor-Crossdale, Lawal, Owusu

Sammi Fridjonsson did well to control a zipped pass to the edge of the area, before feeding Liam Kelly - who delightfully slipped in Harry Cardwell, allowing the former Hull striker to stroke home with ease.

After a tense opening spell to the tie, in which Royals stopper Lewis Ward only had to deal with a duo of long range efforts - the Royals took the lead 16 minutes in after capitalising on a decent spell of possession.

He weaved to the edge of the box before curling home a majestic effort into the bottom corner of the net, much to the delight of the fair smattering of home supporters.

The home side then came back into proceedings, Ward again forced to be alert to palm away a strike from 25 yards - before United equalised after some magic from forward Eoghan Stokes.

The Royals Academy could easily have taken a lead into the break however, only for Tariqe Fosu to blaze over the bar from close range after a deft back flick from Kelly.

United again showed promise as they restarted after the break - Tyler Denton jinked in from the left, only to lash his shot way over the bar from a tight angle.

The Royals then had a half hearted penalty appeal for handball turned down, before they re-took the lead - as Fridjonsson unleashed a secret weapon!

The gifted midfielder hurdled a Rory Delap-esque long throw into the centre of the penalty area, where Fosu kept his composure to knock home from close range.

It was three not long afterwards. YouTube sensation Liam Kelly finishing coolly after Leeds failed to clear their lines. Cardwell almost had a brace as he clipped wide from close range after a dangerous run by McLennan, whilst Fosu also almost picked up a second goal - smashing the crossbar after good work by Kuhl.

United rallied late on but the Reading back four held firm and impressively sealed an admirable victory.
