Bignall back in 4-2 win

11 December 2013

Royals see off Swindon

Nicholas Bignall played his first game in more than two years and scored as our under 21s beat Swindon 4-2 in a friendly on Wednesday afternoon.

Bignall has had terrible luck with injuries, and last played in October 2011 when on loan at Wycombe Wanderers. He is with Reading on a non-contract basis, doing his long-term rehab with us in a bid to get his career up and running once again. The Academy graduate has worked incredibly hard, and news of his comeback was greeted with great warmth right around the Club.

Indeed Jem Karacan, who is currently overseas on a short break, tweeted his congratulations to Nicholas having read about his goal on our Twitter feed.

The game itself was an entertaining affair, Dominic Samuel setting up Craig Tanner and Matt Partridge to give us a 2-0 lead. Tanner then went close on a couple of occasions, but a penalty saw Swindon halve the deficit before the interval.

Our 'keeper Dan Lincoln then made a series of excellent saves, but Town had their equaliser with a good header around the hour mark.

We were not to be held back for long though, and Albanian youth international Shpat Ismajli scored a very nice goal from the edge of the box to put us back in front.

And Bignall rounded off a very positive afternoon with a good finish from another Samuel assist, and Nicholas got 20 minutes under his belt; the next step on what has been a very long road for the local-born frontman.

Players used include: Dan Lincoln, Sean Long, Shane Griffin, Pierce Sweeney (c), Matt Partridge, Aaron Tshibola, Nick Arnold, Jack Jeffrey, Germaine Ofori, Craig Tanner, Dominic Samuel, Shpat Ismajli, Nicholas Bignall
