Defender misses out

31 December 2013

Gorkss suspended

Defender Kaspars Gorkss is suspended for our New Year's Day game with Nottingham Forest.

The centre back was sent off for two yellow cards in our defeat at Middlesbrough, although Nigel Adkins said after the game that there was no contact when Emannuel Ledesma went to ground for the second caution.

Chris Gunter is expected to shift to centre back, with Stephen Kelly coming in at full back. Young Niall Keown (son of former Reading man Martin Keown) or Irish youth international Pierce Sweeney could be on the bench as defensive cover if needed. Michael Hector is due back from his loan at Aberdeen after this weekend's FA Cup game with Brighton.

Royston Drenthe missed the 'Boro game through personal reasons, but Adkins said after the match that he hopes the Dutchman will be available for Forest. Hal Robson-Kanu returned to the bench for that game following a knee injury.

Jordan Obita missed the last two games through illness and it remains to be seen whether he is available for New Year's Day.

Currently sidelined are: Wayne Bridge (knee), Sean Morrison (knee), Kaspars Gorkss (ban), Jem Karacan (knee), Chris Baird (ankle), Mikele Leigertwood (ankle) & Jason Roberts (hip).

Forest will be without the suspended Darius Henderson, so former Royal Greg Halford is currently being employed up front.
