McCarthy's Birthday delight

4 December 2013

Goalkeeper on "massive win"

Royals goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was thrilled to have kept a clean sheet which ensured a 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic, on the night of his 24th Birthday.

Celebrations were doubled for the Birthday boy at the final whistle as Reading moved up to fourth place in the Sky Bet Championship, and the England stopper was delighted personally and for the team.

"It was a massive win for us," McCarthy told BBC Radio Berkshire. "With Bournemouth coming here on Saturday, we can take all the positives out of it and go into the weekend going for another win.

"I'm happy where I am and how I'm playing at the moment - the main thing was getting the three points and moving up the board.

"We've got plenty of goals in the team and we're a real unit. It's good for the manager to have some great choices up front, we have a great squad here and it all bodes well for the season."

With our unbeaten home record still intact, the Academy graduate feels confident ahead of this Saturday's game with the Cherries at Madejski Stadium.

"We feel really confident and strong at home. We know Bournemouth are going to give us a tough game but with the way we're playing and how solid we are at the back and going forward we'll be causing them a lot of problems."
