Ready for promotion assault

5 December 2013

Ludlow and Ward on signing

Reading FC Women manager Jayne Ludlow is delighted with the strength of the squad, following the acquisition Wales' record all time scorer Helen Ward.

The Royals have made several additions to their already successful group of players and, with an excellent mix of youth and experience, Ludlow is hoping for a successful few seasons ahead.

"I'm extremely pleased with the squad we have at the moment. Hopefully we can still get a few more in. We have some fantastic players coming through but we also have a good blend of experience too. Hopefully it will be a lovely but competitive environment that will give us success over the next few seasons.

"I played alongside Helen for Wales and for she is a fantastic centre forward. She scored a few goals in the WSL1 last year but we didn't see the best of her. I'm hoping myself and my coaches will get the best out of her again - if she's happy and she's on form she will score goals.

"It's a little bit odd the way it's structured with the FA Cup starting before the league does, but we look forward to the start of the new season."

The experienced Ward hopes to lead the Royals to a promotion challenge, with the Women's Super League kicking off in March.

"We've got some good players in the squad, a really young side and the signings Jayne has brought in have added experience to that. I'm excited to lead what will hopefully be a promotion challenge.

"I've known Jayne a long time and she gave me a call and asked me what my plans were. At the time I wasn't sure, but there was something nagging at the back of my brain that this is the place for me. And it's really good to be here.

"I'd like to think I'm a typical striker, I like to get in behind defenders and work hard. If the chances come, I'll try and put them in the back of the net. The main thing is my work rate - I try and give my best to the entire team.

"We're hoping to be right up there next season, there are a lot of teams that will be challenging."
