Royals hero delighted with McDermott
Former Royals hero Martin Butler was at Madejski Stadium this past weekend to witness our win over Sunderland – and told Royals TV that he’s delighted with the success Brian McDermott has brought to the club.
Butler, who was at the game thanks to the Reading FC Former Players Association, received a fantastic ovation from the home support as he was introduced to the crowd at half time.
“Brian was Chief Scout when I was here. He was a really, really nice person and couldn’t do enough for you. He would help you out in any way he could – and it’s fantastic what he’s done here,” said Martin
“My son never got to see me play, so it’s fantastic to bring him back now to watch the game – the atmosphere is brilliant.”
The forward scored 32 goals in 103 appearances for the club, helping Alan Pardew’s Royals to promotion to the second tier in 2002 – and clearly still looks back on his time in Berkshire with a great fondness.
“You look around the place and it brings back really happy memories. The stadium is fantastic and the fans get right behind the team. It was a great time in my career.
“The club seemed to really take a forward step in those years and obviously now they’ve gone on to the Premier League. It’s nice to think back that we were a little bit of a part of it.”
