Armstrong humbled by show of appreciationChris Armstrong spoke to 'The Royal' earlier this month and thanked Reading and Sheffield United fans for their fantastic tribute when the two sides met in the FA Cup in January.
The former Reading and Sheffield United man called the club to ask if we could print a message of thanks to supporters for their show of appreciation in the fourth round tie at Madejski Stadium.
After an idea by supporters, the whole Stadium stood to applaud Chris in the third minute of the game, signifying his squad number for both the Blades and the Royals.
Chris was at home in the North East for his daughter’s first birthday party, but he saw footage and photographs from what was a very fitting tribute to an inspirational man.
As published in the official matchday programme for the Wigan game, Chris said, “It was amazing and I just can’t thank people enough for taking part, organising it and thinking of the idea in the first place. I really didn’t expect it, to be honest I could never have pictured that and it was probably better than I could ever imagine. It’s just something I will never, ever forget.
“It was very touching to see the gaffer join in as well, he’s said a lot of kind words that he didn’t need to and it’s been very, very kind of him. I hope both teams can do well and keep the success going, it looks very possible at the moment and I’m praying the boys at Reading stay up and United get promoted as well, that would be perfect!
“I was back at home for my little one’s party on the day and to be honest that’s probably the only reason in the world I would have missed being at the game. It was a bit stressful though, we had God knows how many kids running around, there was a disco and I was in charge of the food but thankfully I managed not to burn the chips!
“I really can’t put it all into words in terms of what happened at the game, the fans didn’t need to do that and it’s something I will always, always appreciate more than you can possibly imagine. Thank you.”
