Blackman thrilled with Brian's faith
Nick Blackman can already sense that this is a unique football club after making his first appearance for the Royals against Sunderland.
The striker came on mid-way through the second half, won the free-kick for Jimmy Kebe's eventual winner and was delighted that Brian McDermott had faith in him.
"It was a great result for us - the boys really dug in and it was great to be a part of it," Blackman said. "Everyone could see how hard we worked and the gaffer won't let that drop.
"The gaffer said 'go and score the winner' which showed he has great faith in me. I've not had that at previous clubs so it was great.
"It was brilliant - the fans were fantastic and right behind the boys. Even when we went to 1-1 they were right behind me and the rest of the team."
Coincidentally, it was in fact Blackman's second appearance at Madejski Stadium - after playing for Sheffield United in the FA Cup fourth round the previous weekend. After hearing that the Royals were interested in the youngster, Nick said his heart was set on a move to Berkshire.
"I was playing for Sheffield United in the FA Cup. It wasn't the right scoreline but I really enjoyed it and it's a great stadium to perform in," he added.
"I was aware that one or two clubs were interested so it was a surprise - but as soon as I heard Brian was interested in me, there was only one place I wanted to go."
