Mapps: Maintaining momentum

22 February 2013

Defender previews visit of Wigan

Defender Adrian Mariappa is keen for the Royals to snowball their solid form in Saturday's Barclays Premier League match with Wigan.

Despite suffering our first league defeat since New Year's Day at the hands of Stoke, the centre back is still buoyed by our form since Christmas and wants that to continue on Saturday at Madejski Stadium.

And asked by the media about the importance of our style of play and formation - Mariappa pointed out that the most important thing is getting three points.

"At the end of the day we're only looking for three points," stressed Mapps. "If we can be entertaining and give the fans a good show then great - but the reality is that you can't win 3 or 4 nil every game and play free-flowing football. Sometimes you need to battle it out, especially when we're in position we're in.

"We know how important the game is. Every game has been of this importance this season - we're fighting for our lives. It's going to be a tough game but we're ready and looking forward to it.

"We played some good stuff on Monday and now every single game for us is massive - we've been doing this now for a number of months so it's just about carrying on what we're doing right and working on things we can improve on.

"There are quite a few games to go and there are a lot of teams that aren't safe. At the end of the day, we've just got to look after ourselves - that's what we're doing.

"Personally I'm really looking forward to the games that are coming up - the team has been playing really well. We've had a lot of good results lately and we've got some momentum which we'll be looking to carry on on Saturday.

Mapps also paid tribute to the man behind the back four, Adam Federici, after a succession of top-quality performances from the Aussie.

"I've known him to be a top 'keeper for some time," he said. "He's been in my PFA Championship Team of the Year for about the past four years - I think he's a tremendous goalkeeper. Everyone makes mistakes and you go through loses of form but it's testament to his character how well he's performing now. He's playing to the level he can do - he's a top quality goalkeeper.
