The Royals are delighted to announce the signing of Sheffield United forward Nick Blackman.
The 23-year-old has scored 14 goals for the Blades this season and pens a three and a half year deal at Madejski Stadium - click here for his exlusive first video intrview.
There was plenty of interest in Nick’s signature in this transfer window, but the six-footer has chosen to come to Reading – and says he can’t wait to start a new chapter in his career.
“I’m really looking forward to it and I’m very excited,” Blackman told Reading FC Player.
“I met the gaffer last night, he was fantastic with me and I couldn’t have asked any more from him and Nick Hammond. I can’t wait to play – hopefully I can try and get involved as soon as possible.”
Manager Brian McDermott also spoke to our online TV station, and said that he was pleased to bolster his ranks with such a versatile player, who is considered one of the brightest prospects in the Football League.
“We’re very pleased to get him,” said Brian. “He had options elsewhere but he knows that we try to develop our players and make them better. He’s played a lot of games, and has so much more to come.
“He can play in three or four positions – up front, either one of the wide areas and off the striker. I believe he can play off the striker, I spoke to him about that last night. He’s another player that’s hungry, wants to learn and wants to improve. His goalscoring record is getting better, better and better every year. He takes set plays, so he’s a really good acquisition to the group.”
Chairman Sir John Madejski said:” I'd like to officially welcome Nick Blackman to the club, he has rightly caught the eye with his performances in recent times, and he will be a very important addition to our line of forwards.”
Nick began his career at Macclesfield Town, graduating through the Silkmen’s Academy before making his professional debut at the age of 17, scoring his first goal in only his second game for the club.
His promise was quickly spotted, and in 2009 Blackman joined Premier League side Blackburn Rovers - impressing at reserve team level at Ewood Park before enjoying fruitful loan spells at Blackpool and Oldham.
He also caught the eye north of the border, scoring ten times in 15 (+3) appearances on loan at Motherwell in the Scottish Premier League – including a spectacular header against Rangers at Ibrox.
The Bury born left footer made the switch to Bramall Lane in August 2012 – where he has again shown a keen eye for goal, and put in an impressive performance against the Royals in our FA Cup clash this past weekend.
The deal is subject to final ratification of all paperwork from the football authorities but we expect this to be a formality.
His squad number will be confirmed in due course.
