Salako backs McDermott

30 January 2013

John believes fans will be vital

Former Royal John Salako has backed Brian McDermott and the Royals to succeed in the Barclays Premier League.

Salako was at Madejski Stadium ahead of Wednesday night's clash with Chelsea, and said: "It's always lovely to be here. I do quite a bit in and around Reading and come to the ground whenever I can.

"He's doing a great job and the boys have got a feel good factor now. It's all about team spirit, focus, application and desire. It's about focusing on each game as it comes.

"Brian's such a lovely guy with great man-management. He's a good coach and a top bloke. I think he's a new breed of manager that really engages with the players, the fans, the board, and I think he's doing a phenomenal job within the financial constraints. I wish him the very best.

The former midfield man also paid tribute to the Reading supporters - who Salako feels, will be vital to the club's success come the end of the season.

"I love the fans, and they're good to me. It's lovely to be here and I loved my time here and I still feel very close ton the club. There are a lot of guys I still know around the place and it's very much home from home.

"The Reading fans are going to be absolutely vital. Games like tonight, the place will be jumping and the atmosphere will be buzzing. But come Saturday against Sunderland, there'll be really important - that's when they need the fans behind them.

"It's wonderful to have Reading back in the Barclays Premier League. Before Christmas was tough but we've bounced back. Five wins out of the last six have given us real momentum and real belief.

"I think with the games that we've got here at Madejski Stadium, there's a real sense of optimism and a great chance. With 15 games to go, 15 cup finals, it's in our hands."

John will be helping promote Barclays 'Pingit' app by the Dome between 1pm and 3pm this Saturday - why not pop along and say hello!
