Adkins' pre-season aim

11 July 2013

Manager on upcoming friendlies

Royals manager Nigel Adkins says the pre-season aim is to get every single player available for selection for our opening day league fixture against Ipswich.

Reading kick start their pre-season schedule this Saturday when they face Wycombe Wanderers behind closed doors at Hogwood Park before heading to Portugal for a week - and Adkins says it's important to have a winning mentality and give everyone an opportunity.

"We’ll have the winning mentality, but for me, it’s about making sure that we get patterns of play that we want, the players get sufficient game time and that everyone gets an opportunity," he said. "It’s not about the first game of the season, it’s about 46 that we’re going to play so come the end of the campaign, we end up top.

"That weekend when we play Swansea, we play Bristol Rovers on the Sunday and we will mix the teams - and with all being well, the players will get 90 minutes of football."

The boss added that results in this pre-season period are insignificant as he prepares to put a side together to face the Tractor Boys on Saturday 3rd August.

"For me, in pre-season, the results are totally irrelevant. The objective is to get to the point where I can select the team on the Thursday or Friday before we play Ipswich Town with everyone available for selection.

"At Wigan I think we won two tournaments, played about twelve games – won them all. I think we lost the first ten games of the season, something like that. On the other hand, I’ve lost loads of pre-season games and we’ve got off to a flyer come the start of the season. Results-wise, it’s totally irrelevant."
