Kirby on 'amazing' experience

Royals hero on striking gold

Reading FC Women star Fran Kirby has been talking about her 'amazing' experience at the World University Games.

The striker helped Great Britain claim gold in Russia and was named as Player of the Final after scoring twice in a 6-2 thrashing of Mexico.

“We knew what we wanted to do, but it's incredible that we managed to do it," said Fran.

"It's been amazing. The staff have been wonderful and it's an experience I'm never going to forget. It was everything everyone dreamed of when they come here."

Head Coach Kay Cossington also hailed the influence of the Royals striker, whose feats were made all the more impressive given that she has fought back from a broken ankle.

"It's a great achievement," said Cossington. "Winning is what we came here to do, and thankfully we've achieved that. Fran has had a tough time with a number of things, missed out on international football, and to see her receive that award [player of the final] was overwhelming because I know what journey she's been on."
