Stats for promotion

16 July 2013

Adkins sets targets

Manager Nigel Adkins has held a number of meetings with his players this summer, analysing what is required to gain promotion back to the Premier League.

From the first few days back in pre-season training at Champneys in the Midlands, the boss has set out a single goal - to bounce back to the top flight at the first attempt.

He explained. "We’ve been away and had several meetings with the players, so we know what’s required in the Championship. We’ve looked at all the different stats over the last seven or eight years at what teams have achieved with certain parameters. For example, winning games, scoring goals, keeping clean sheets. It focuses the players’ minds on what’s going to be required and what has been required. Points total, for example.

"We need to win. The players are well versed, we know what we want to achieve. We want to get ourselves back in the Premier League and we want to win the division.

"We know it’s going to be challenging as it will be for the other teams in the division. What we’ve got to do is navigate our way through what’s going to be a very challenging and very exciting ten months.

"Pre-season is the first bit – can we arrive with everyone available for selection for the Ipswich game – knowing how we want to play, what the responsibilities are for them as an individual and collectively as a team.

"We know it’s a long, challenging campaign. The year before last, this club won the division. We know what’s expected in the Championship – it is challenging, it is demanding, and it’s about finding a way to win games of football.

"We know that all teams are going to have a way of playing so what we’ve got to do is concentrate on what we want to do and play the way we want to play. That’s the mindset that we’ve got at the moment."

Our season starts at home to Ipswich on 3rd August, and our final pre-season friendly is a week earlier at home to Swansea. Tickets for both games are on sale now - call 0844 249 1871 or go to
