Anton: Let's be contenders

27 June 2013

Owner aims to help team

Owner Anton Zingarevich believes our new signings can help the Royals be contenders in the upcoming Championship season.

With Royston Drenthe, Wayne Bridge and Danny Williams all agreeing to move to Madejski Stadium, these are exciting times for the club and the team are back in pre-season training today.

Speaking in a new in-depth documentary on the club, Anton said, "If we can help the team with [new] players that fit the criteria, and with all the work this manager is putting in on the training ground, we will be strong contenders and that is all we are thinking about.

"We won the league last season so why should it be any different for this season? We've watched many games in the Championship - both myself and the recruitment department - and we really feel the group can win the league with help."

Reflecting on the lessons of last season, Anton said, "It was obviously disappointing to be relegated because we have aspirations to be a Premier League club. But you have to take the positives from everything and I think we're well equipped for the Premier League, having spent a year there."

Striker Jason Roberts added, "It wasn't nice being relegated but we will learn from it, You realise the levels you have to get to if you want to be successful. Success for us is not just getting promoted but staying in the Premier League. Different clubs and teams use different models, we have to take the sting of relegation - but come back stronger.

"This team is used to success, and to win promotion from the position we were in and the budget we had was fantastic. I believe this team will go on and achieve more. Those are real men in that dressing room and they will come good."
