Boss: We'll need to mix it

20 June 2013

Adkins eyes flexible styles

Nigel Adkins has enjoyed great success as a manager playing an attractive brand of football, but also appreciates the need to play more than one style at the appropriate time.

At the tail end of last season it was clear that Nigel and Andy Crosby were making their mark on our approach to games, and as we prepare for life in the Championship the boss will again be putting his stamp on the team.

He said, "The emphasis is trying to keep good possession of the ball, because I believe it gives you a good opportunity to work through the team, penetrate and score goals. But it’s about winning, can you win, can you mix it up?

"This team won the Championship before and then it’s different going into the Premier League, when you give the ball away cheaply, good teams don’t let you have it, we saw that against Man City in our final home game.

"It was really beneficial coming in when we did, it was a shame in terms of the league position but that was the reality of it. Looking forward it gives myself and Andy a great opportunity to look at players, and for them to look at us. Maybe one or two players it wasn’t working for before, it became working better for them. We’ve got a clear understanding of what we need and where we’re going.

"It will be a first pre-season under myself and Andy Crosby so we’d like to think the players will enjoy it. There’ll be lots of football done, although we don’t need to play loads of games.

"We’ll make sure we arrive at the first game of the season where we want to be physically, technically, tactically and mentally in preparation for a long exciting campaign."
