Mapps targets clean sheet

4 June 2013

Royals in action for Jamaica tonight

Royals defender Adrian Mariappa has a clean sheet in his sights as his Reggae Boyz take on Mexico in an important World Cup 2014 qualifier tonight.

Mapps has been called up alongside Garath McCleary and Jobi McAnuff, and provisionally Shaun Cummings, as Jamaica aim to record their first win of the qualifiers in the early hours of Wednesday morning - kick off 2.30am BST.

The Boyz are currently bottom of their America and Caribbean group but are only three points behind first-placed Panama, and take on the Mexicans fourth months on after denying them a home win for the first time in 12 years - as our boys helped Jamaica make history in the Azteca Stadium with a 0-0 draw.

Mapps is set to marshall the defence tonight for Jamaica's first game of three in eight days and he told the Jamaican Gleaner, "I am used to responsibility and being the most senior member of the team,"

"We still have a lot of quality in the side although we have got injuries to some of our big players, so it is just about training hard now and making sure everyone gels and we have got a good relationship with each other.

"Myself, Demar (Phillips), Nyron (Nosworthy) and Taylor played quite a few games together, so those relationships were built, but now it is about building new relationships and getting that foundation strong for these games.

"We have got seven games to go with everything to play for, so that's what we need to concentrate on. Obviously you don't want to be conceding goals, especially at home. So we will be looking to keep clean sheets in the coming games and that is something that I will be working extremely hard on and so will everyone else."

We'll bring you news of our Royals in action tonight on and on Twitter.
