Supporter who makes 3,500 mile tripsOne of our season ticket holders, Charles McLeod, lives in Toronto, Canada and we spoke to him recently...
When did you start supporting Reading?
The first game I went to was a 1-1 draw with Brighton in 1958. I went to a number of games in the late 1950's and early 1960's until I went to Canada. Following Reading from Canada in pre-internet days was difficult, but in 2007 I had the time, and fortunately the money, to become a season ticket holder and to make trips to the UK.
Impressive! That's something like 3,500 miles! How many games did you get to last season?
15 first team games (including cup games), some of which were away games, resulting from seven trips to the UK. (It should have been 16 games but, after I had traveled to Sunderland last August, the game was postponed (waterlogged pitch) just as I was walking up to the ground).
What were the highlights of last season?
1. Scoring two goals in the final minutes to draw 2-2 with Chelsea
2. Watching some very good and famous teams
3. An enjoyable afternoon at The Hawthorns last October when the Under 21 team drew 3-3 with West Bromwich - watching some of the future first team players.
And the low points?
2. Losing 7-5 to Arsenal in the Capital One Cup after playing some lovely football and leading 4-0 after 40 minutes.
How do you feel about next season?
Cautiously optimistic! Nigel Adkins, of course, has a great record and I like the style and quality of football that is starting to emerge. I wish I could have been at the 4-2 win at Fulham. I hope I can attend a good number of games in 2013-14!
