Pavel & D'Ath: Football Idol

13 June 2013

Second in series

In a series of articles this summer, we've spoken to various members of the Royals squad to find out who they idolised in their formative years as a footballer.

For all of us in love with the beautiful game, as a child there was a player who transfixed us above all others - and for many professionals such figures inspire their firsts steps into a career in sport. Second to reveal his reverence....Pavel Pogrebnyak!

Pavel's football idol.....David Beckham!

"I would say that my favourite player is David Beckham. He’s 38 years of age, and so had been playing for a long time. It was a sad moment for everyone when he retired, but he has a fantastic career to look back on. No one can forget the goal he scored for England against Greece to secure World Cup qualification."

"Also Drogba as well. He is one of the greatest strikers of his generation and a player many aspire to be. He won the Champions League for Chelsea, and it is a trophy he deserved to get."

Young Royals midfielder Lawson D'Ath also heralds Beckham as his football idol, as well as Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

"I’ve got two, Beckham and Gerrard," Lawson said.

"Gerrard - mainly because he plays in the same position as me. I love Beckham, obviously the free kick against Greece was a fantastic moment. I remember jumping up and down on the sofa! He loves football so you never know he might come back!"
