"All about relationships"

Hammond delighted to work with Adkins

Royals director of football Nick Hammond has described Nigel Adkins as 'the perfect fit' as the pair begin their working relationship at Reading Football Club.

Speaking in Tuesday morning's press conference, Hammond stressed the importance of good relationship between the manager and the director of footballl.

“I’ve worked with Alan Pardew, Steve Coppell, Brendan Rodgers and Brian McDermott, all very closely and I envisage that this will be exactly the same. It’s never been divisive at Reading and you can speak to any of those managers and they’ll tell you that. My job is to support the manager in every way that I can which allows him to go and prepare the team to win football matches.

“Nigel’s never worked with a Director of Football before but we talked at length over the last ten days and first and foremost it’s always about the relationships at a football club or in any successful business. I had a very good feeling with Nigel that that would work very well.

“I’m absolutely delighted with where this process has ended up. Nigel is the perfect fit for this football club. He brings an honesty and an integrity to the club, which is what we’ve always been about. It’s a new era and I’m very much looking forward to working with Nigel and Andy."

After spending time learning how a director of football works in Germany, Nigel is confident that the relationship can work and is already on the same wavelength as Hammond.

“We’ve really got on well me and Nick since we’ve had a couple of conversations. And I’ve got every confidence in the modern age of football that that can work.

“I spent a week in Germany at Hamburg last week. They were very hospitable. You’ve got former Chelsea coaches Frank Arnesen and Lee Congleton there as sporting director and director of football.

“I got full access, saw all the training and how they operate. So that was one of many aspects I wanted to go and have a look at, how it operates, how it works, situations that could maybe have been handled better. It was just great to see the whole set-up there."
