Inside look at Old Trafford battle

The Royals certainly gave a good account of themselves at Old Trafford this past weekend – as the stats show!

It was always going to be a tough ask - in 21 years of Premier League competition, Manchester United have played 122 games against newly-promoted sides – losing just 11 in total, and only four times at home. The last time they lost to a newly-promoted side in front of their own fans was more than ten years ago, when Bolton upset Sir Alex’s side with a 2-1 win over the Red Devils at Old Trafford in October 2001.

 In total the Royals completed 75% of their passes - 252 out of an attempted 338.

 Reading attempted 124 passes in the attacking third of the pitch, compared to United’s 139.

 The visitors attempted 26 crosses. The home side attempted 22.

 Reading attempted 22 tackles, winning 22. Manchester United won 12 tackles of an attemtped 20.

 There were 43 aerial duels during the game, with the Royals winning 23 of them. 

 Mikele Leigertwood had the most completed passes in a Reading shirt – successful managing 46 out of 56. 




 Only Ryan Giggs made more successful passes in the final third than Nicky Shorey. 

 Jobi McAnuff completed 12 of an attempted 13 passes

 No player made more successful tackles than Mikele Leigertwood

 Alex Pearce completed six clearances and one five out of six of his aerial duels.
