Adkins on Roberts

3 May 2013

"A big step forward"

Nigel Adkins was pleased to see Jason Roberts take a step forward with his recovery from injury, with the striker no longer needing crutches.

Roberts has required surgery on his hip injury which has kept him out since December - but the manager has been delighted with his attitude and positivity around the place.

"He's come off his crutches. That's really positive - he's in good spirits at the moment. That's a big step forward in his rehabilitation. He's been very positive around the training ground," Adkins said.

"There's been a very good progression so far and you've got to keep working through the stages. He's a player that we want make sure we've got fit and available as soon as possible. We'll have to see how the pre-season period pans out."

Adkins also confirmed that Roberts is contracted until 2014, and believes he was a catalyst for the Royals' promotion to the Barclays Premier League last season.

"He's not out of contract, he's already got one for next season," he added.

"I thought he was a big reason why Reading won the Championship. He was a great signing for Reading and his impetus when he came in was at the perfect time. He's an experienced centre forward with Premier League experience, who is well acquitted - as he has proved in the Premier League and Championship.

"Characters are always important. You've got to have that right blend of people who want to improve all the time but winning characters too."
