Adkins: "We will improve"

14 May 2013

Royals boss looks to the future

Nigel Adkins believes the Royals will take heart from their performance against a world class Manchester City outfit.

Goals from Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko granted the visitors a win on Tuesday evening, but there was certainly enough there from the home side to hint that Reading are continuing their improvement under a new manager.

“We did pass the ball well and in the second half I think we gave them a good run for their money,” said Adkins.

“We’ve played against a top side in Man City, we were not quite sure how they would turn up tonight given the situation that they have faced over the last couple of days, but give their players great credit because their mindset was on it.

“From our point of view the goals we’ve given away are things we could have avoided, maybe we didn’t get near them enough in the first half and if you open yourself out you’re going to get taken the cleaners by the good teams. But, that said, Pav’s header was well saved by Hart and we had one and two other oohs, aahs and close shaves. Maybe with our players we allow them to play the ball and make mistakes because that’s the only way they’re going to improve. There’s lots of positives that we’re going to take moving forward to future.”

That positivity and momentum, Adkins believes, will be key at the start of next season’s Championship campaign.

“All being well we’ll have a good summer from a recruitment point of view, then when we arrive for next season we look forward to a campaign that’s going to be a challenging one, a demanding one, but one that’s full of desire, ambition, hope and drive at Reading Football Club. It’s going to be another great year to follow."
