Adkins: Work paid off

4 May 2013

Nigel's men take deserved win

Nigel Adkins' team earned a very encouraging and fully deserved 4-2 win away to Fulham, and the boss paid homage to his players for an excellent display.

Hal Robson-Kanu scored twice, with Jem Karacan and Adam Le Fondre also on the scoresheet to earn a sixth win of the season; only the second on our travels in this campaign.

It was a very positive afternoon, and the boss said, "There's been a good progression from the players and credit to them. We've scored four goals away from home which is really pleasing and we could have had more in fact. We played some really good football and controlled it for large spells.

"We spoke to the players after the game, talked about several things and we've developed well in a short period of time, you could see that on the pitch. We passed it well, created chances. We're disappointed with the goals we conceded, as you should be, but all in all it's a good afternoon's entertainment for the fans and a lot of hard graft from the players.

"The performance underlined what we're trying to do. I want to pass from the back, play through the thirds, penetrate and score goals. Today the outlet pass was on, we've done that and played out. There are several different ways you can play out, if they want to press on you can do it earlier. The attitude and application has been first class. There's a hell of a lot of work to do but we've progressed in every game, which is important.

"We're asking the players to do certain things and we got a well-deserved victory after all the work the lads have put in over the last few weeks. It's just a shame where we are in the division but we have to keep looking forward. Everyone has shown again today they're working hard for the club."

It is a first win for the new boss, and he continued, "It's always hard to win in this league, especially away from home, so it's pleasing to get three points. We've got two games left and we'll focus on them. They'll both be challenging but we'll look to keep progressing. We played against a talented team and got the right scoreline. We've had a really positive mindset and given the supporters a really good day in the sun in London, which is pleasing.

"We know where we after for next season, a tough campaign in the Championship, Reading were champions last season and we know what's expected. We will keep building."
